Cathelijne

Cathelijne Blok describes herself as an art historian, founder of platform TittyMag and media maker. We talked to her about seeing life and people as paintings, her future and more.

What does the concept of being “as you are” mean to you?

That fact that I can be me and the realisation that there are people in this world who don’t have that privilege. Some friends call me a lone wolf. It’s not that I like to be alone because I love attending social events and surrounding myself with people, crowded places and spaces. But I also love to totally zoom out and give attention to someone or something that inspires me. The element of surprise is really what attracts me.

When do you feel your most comfortable?

When I am in places that surprise me. The North side of Amsterdam has that effect on me. It’s a place full of colour but also a place that is in a continuous battle of gentrification and keeping its own identity. From the city centre you must take the ferry to visit Amsterdam North. The ferry ride gives me that moment of silence in the middle of a busy city.

What stigmas and boundaries did you have to break in your life?

I love if people and especially women (and everybody who identifies as) come together and support each other, help each other and look out for each other, in every way possible. I would like to help in every way possible create an inclusive conversation that hopefully stops a certain way of framing and  stereotyping. I try to do that by creating and highlighting stories in different levels to open up that conversation about feminism whenever I get the chance.

What are you currently working on?

The bottom line is that I try to tell stories in every way possible. I do this trough TittyMag as a feminist art platform, which we are currently restructuring, but I am also working on a book about art. I create podcasts for Kunsthal Rotterdam and Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and I am curating an exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam. And there is a lot more coming up.

Wow, that seems like a very full agenda!

It is! I only do projects that have to do with art or TittyMag, because I am an art historian. I also love working on projects where I am not in front of a camera. My background is in media, I worked a lot in advertising and media, for example as video editing or editor in chief. At the moment I have an idea for a television series that I would like to collaborate for with different women.
